SHOCKING FATALITY AT
HEADCORN.
MAN CUT TO PIECES.
A shocking fatality occurred at Headeorn on Monday afternoon at the Church Crossing,
an old inhabitant of the village, Ishmael Gurr, aged 88, being cut to pieces
by a train when in the act of crossing the line. The circumstances of the case
are most distressing, for the deceased, who had been hop-picking at Mr. Hubble's,
would have finished on the next day, and on this particular day was returning
home about an hour earlier than usual. From the evidence given at the inquest,
it appeared that the unfortunate man crossed the line without taking apparent
notice whether the a train was in sight, although it is suggested that he was
watching for the up mail that was shortly due, and did not notice the down train,
due at Headcorn at 4.4 This particular crossing has been the scene of five deaths,
of which four have been accidents, the last having occurred two years ago, when
a hop-picker was cut to pieces by a passing train, and the jury on Tuesday in
bringing a verdict of accidental death, added a rider to the effect that it was
necessary, for the safety of the public, that a footbridge should be erected.
