Sarah Sophia STONE was born in 1890 in Southall, Middlesex.5,9 Sarah was Sarah Stone on the 1891 census suggesting that her mother did not marry Thomas Smith until after her birth and probably after the birth of her brother Henry. Sarah's birth certificate confirms that she was illegitimate. There is no father mentioned on her certificate. She was living on 5 Apr 1891 in 4 Grove Cottages, North Road, Norwood, Middlesex..5

Sarah was living at North Road, Southall and Thomas was living at Alder's Cottages, Southall. Thomas SMITH (son of William SMITH) was born about 1867 in Hendon, Middlesex.⁸ Birth data acquired from the 1901 census. At the time of Caroline Jane's birth (29 Nov 1899) Thomas was a Builders Labourer. This is confirmed on Caroline's birth certificate and the 1901 census where he is listed as a Builders Carter. Thomas is shown as a labourer on his marriage certificate. Sarah STONE and Thomas SMITH had the following children:
