He served as a Private 119203 Law, Raymond Robert James, in the Motor Transport Division of the Army Service Corps during World War One from 24th August 1915 until he was discharged as being "no linger fit for war service" according to the Kings Regulations (paragraph 392 XVI) on the 3rd October 1916. At the time of his enlistment Raymond was a Body Builder in the motor trade and was living at 14 Friston Street in Fulham SW6 with his wife Annie and daughter Margaret Annie. Described by his niece Daphne May Law he as a "little man" a fact born out by his disruption in his army enlistment and discharge papers. There he is described as being 5 feet 5 and a half inches tall and weighing only 106 lbs (48 Kilograms). In addition the documents go on to say that he had grey eyes and medium brown hair. By the time that Roland Victor was born in April 1888 we know that Robert was now a grocer and draper. This is verified by the marriage certificate of his son Raymond Robert James. Based on 1901 census, Robert had become a Clerk and Millers Traveller and on the 1911 census he was recorded as a tailor. When his son Roland married Elizabeth Victoria Benson in July 1919 Robert had changed his stated profession to being a wardrobe dealer. At the time of his marriage to Elizabeth he was a wardrobe dealer and was living at 2 Dudley Road Southall. Roland's daughter, Daphne May, who also believed that shop he and his father worked for was called Corbier. She remembers the Roland worked as a delivery man for the shop and has recollections of them having the use of a motor cycle and side car. Daphne told a story of her mother riding on the pillion seat while her father drove and that she was put in the side car and was packed in with cushions. Roland also worked as the gardener at the rectory of Holy Cross Church in Greenford. At the beginning of WWII he, with the help of his daughter Daphne, removed the stained glass windows from the church for safe keeping during hostilities. One night, during an air raid, quite a few incendiary bombs were dropped. A man who loved his gardening was most upset to find that is wheel barrow had taken a direct hit and another bomb was in his asparagus bed in the rectory kitchen garden.
