Elyza WHIBLEY was born before 18 Jun 1825 in Lamberhurst, Kent.2 She was christened on 19 Jun 1825 in Brenchley, Kent.3 She was living on 30 Mar 1851 in Waterbar Nursery Cottages.4 She was living on 3 Apr 1881 in 62 Great Queen Street, Dartford, Kent.2 She was living on 5 Apr 1891 in 1 Bingley Cottages, High Street, Greenford Magna, Middlesex.5 Descibes as a Sick Nurse, Eliza is living with her daught Sarah Ann and son-in-law Stephen Bush. She is also listed as a widow She died between 1891 and 1901. Elyzamay have been illiterate. The birth certificate of her son William Charles shows her mark (X).

By the 1881 census the majority of the family are back together and living at 62 Great Queen Street, Dartford and is now working as a "Monthly Nurse".


Elyza WHIBLEY and John HERBERT were married on 4 Jan 1845 in Brenchley, Kent.6,7 John and Eliza's fathers names are both omitted from their marriage certificate. John HERBERT (son of John HERBERT and Lucy COPPER) was born about 1825. He was christened on 23 Oct 1825 in Brenchley, Kent.3 He was living on 6 Jun 1841 in Brenchley, Kent.8 He was living on 30 Mar 1851 in Waterbar Nursery Cottages.4 The address on the 1851 census is not clear. He died on 25 Dec 1867 in Dartford, Kent.9 At the time of William Charles Herbert's birth in 1859, John was a laborer at the paper mill. Then, according to the 1861 census, John and his family lived at 101 White House Buildings, Dartford.

John committed suicide by hanging himself on Christmas Day 1867. The death certificate goes on to say that he had "temporary derangement". It seems he was survived by his wife and family as Eliza appears on the 1871 census as a widower.

Gravesend and Dartford Reporter" dated January 4, 1868.

"SUICIDE - An inquest was held at the Foresters' Arms, on Friday evening before C. J. Carter, Esq., county coroner, on the body of John Herbert, aged 43, who committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom on Christmas evening. It appears that he had exhibited somewhat strange conduct for some time in the past, and the jury accordingly returned a verdict to the effect that he committed the rash act while in a state of temporary insanity."
